Our Hoarding Support System
AN in-depth guide of how MOVE IT OR LOSE IT handles hoarding

If you're struggling with too much stuff, you're not alone. Whether you consider yourself someone who clutters a lot or has a habit of excessive keeping, letting go can be overwhelming. And sometimes, life just happens—loss, trauma, disability, or items that slowly accrue in your house. Then suddenly, your home feels more like an obstacle course than a place of peace.
At Move it or Lose it, we provide compassionate, judgment-free hoarding support in Western North Carolina. Our approach is specifically tailored to you, because no situations are the exact same. Some people need a full-scale, fast-tracked home cleanout, while others prefer a gentle, step-by-step approach. We see and hear your needs!
Important note:
Move it or Lose it is not a traditional cleaning service. We mostly specialize in junk removal, clutter clearing, and bulky waste disposal. If you need deep cleaning, sanitization, or restoration, we can refer you to trusted cleaning professionals in our network who share values of compassion and dignity!
What Kind of Hoarding Help Do You Need?
Sometimes, a space is so full that it becomes unsafe—a quick and structured cleanup is the best option.
This might be the case if:
- Walking paths are blocked, and daily movement is difficult
- Trash, spoiled food, or pests have created dangerous conditions (mold, rotting, foul smell)
- Landlords, family members, or authorities have requested cleanup
- The mental load of dealing with the clutter is too much
Here's How We Handle a Large-scale cleanout:
Consultation first —
Before we start, we can talk in person or through online communications about what matters most to you. We take careful note of sentimental items, important paperwork, and anything you don't want us to touch.
You Can Step Away —
We recommend that residents leave the space during a full cleanout for their own emotional well-being. Some clients want to stay and oversee the process, but we find that more open space to process the change is usually in best interest. Some people also like to have a loved one pop in from time to time.
Fast, Efficient Cleaning —
Our team arrives in protective gear with dumpsters ready to go. We carefully sort, remove, and dispose of clutter while salvaging anything of value.
Property Disposal and Recycling —
Items that are in good condition are donated or repurposed, while the rest are responsibly disposed of. We avoid unnecessary waste whenever possible. We also sell items that are responsibly taken out at our Facebook Marketplace, which can be directed below this blog.
Timeline and Costs —
A full cleanout can sometimes take days, depending on the home's condition. Our labor is $70/hr per worker, plus disposal fees and protective gear costs. If the space has extreme biohazards or infestations, workers receive hazard pay, and the pricing is adjusted accordingly. Our service fees are marked down below this blog.
What Happens Next?
Many people feel a fix of emotions: relief, grief, gratitude, embarrassment, or even frustration whenever they see their space transformed. We respect that—we'll check in with you afterward to ensure you're supported in the transition.
Gentle, Gradual Decluttering
For those who aren't ready for an extreme cleanout, or who feel emotionally attached to their belongings, we offer a slower, ongoing approach. This is ideal for people who:
- Want to stay in control of what's removed
- Those on a budget preferring small and recurring sessions
- Neurodivergent individuals who need extra time to process change
Choose Move it or Lose it!
Unlike standard junk removal services, we not only focus on items but also on people and the environment.
Our team is:
- Compassionate and Judgment-Free
— No shame, no lectures, just assistance.
- LGBTQ+ and Neurodivergent-Friendly —We create a safe space for everyone.
- Custom-Tailored to You — Fast overhaul? Slow decluttering? We can do both.
- Eco-friendly and Ethical — We donate, recycle, and reduce waste whenever possible.
We believe that clearing out a home should never feel like a punishment. It should be an opportunity for comfort, relief, and a fresh start—of course, on your own terms.
